You Might Be A Model Railroader

Sad but true… From eBay

  REAL Rio Grande Southern Coal

Item # 1688514875; Bidding closed. Sold for $10.50 plus cost of UPS.

Seller's Description: You are bidding on two pieces of Rio Grande Southern coal that were picked up at the top of Lizard Head Pass on the RGS grade last summer [2001]. These probably fell out of the tender of one of the RGS's steam locomotives (#20, 41, 74, 455, etc) There is enough coal to fill several HOn3 tenders or one or two On3 tenders (around a handful). Have the ultimate in realism for your highly detailed model, or have a relic from this long abandoned and romanticized railroad. Buyer pays actual shipping. Payment by bank check, personal check, or money order.

Hmmmmmm… three bidders, now will it end up on a layout or in a Christmas stocking?

Enron liquidators auction model trains that once delivered bonuses…

The details given on today's auction of Enron's London "bonus" model railroad are vague. No manufacturer or scale were listed. As part of their liquidation, the story goes, the model train once used to deliver bonus checks to Enron executives in London (UK) have been auctioned along with the other office and executive suite fixtures (large screen televisions, gyms, tanning equipment, painting, sculpture…). The description of the train set was as follows: "the electric train set once used to deliver bonuses to top-performing executives.…. it includes 58 lengths of track, two steam engines, one diesel locomotive and a rail-mounted hovercraft. Only one feature is missing: the bonus checks. " 3/1/2002 New York Post

More news on the Enron trainset from the auction people: "The a special gauge model railway set was used to encourage brokers at Enron's European headquarters, who would fill its carriages with whatever commodity they were buying or selling — such as copper or coal, and in return receive messages and special bonuses." Aaaah, a freight train with a hovercraft for escapes?

Now for Lot 5999: "Lot# 5999 Dovebid Business Auctions
‘EVERY SCHOOLBOYS DREAM’ LEHMAN MODEL RAILWAY WITH 58 BRASS RAIL TRACK SECTIONS, 5007 CONTROLLER AND 5006 TRANSFORMER, 3: POINTS SECTIONS, 2: BUFFERS SECTIONS LEHMAN 2015D AND 2020D MODEL STEAM ENGINES, LEHMAN 21900 MODEL DIESEL LOCO, LEHMAN 22020 MODEL HOVER MACHINE, MODEL COAL STORAGE UNIT, 6: VARIOUS ROLLING STOCK, MODEL ENGINE CRANE AND SUNDRY MODEL CARS"

What a let down. G gauge… not very undetailed… a SUCCESSFUL Chicago company once ran a scale railroad in their executive board room. Okay, it was not weathered, but the very private layout was beautiful (no reports from the private operating sessions). Still, we doubt this will become a factor one checks before investing (even if it should)…

In a related news byte, the now-humorous Enron Code of Ethics Manual has been given a permanent spot in the collection of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Smithsonian Collections, Scholarship & Research

It's a pity that tome can't be posed on or beside their old train set_

The eBay Train-Pages Song (to the tune of "My Favorite Things")

[the buyers sing:]

Athearns and Katos, all MIB'ses and MOC'ses,
Micro-Trains in their original boxes,
K-Line and Lionel, no parts astray,
These are my favorite things on eBay!

Atlas Geep-30's and IHC Big Boys,
Diesels with RailSounds that make lots of big noise,
"Only been test-run for less than a day,"
These are my favorite things on eBay!

Old billboard reefers all lettered for meat-pack,
Sellers who never give negative feedback,
Limited runs that I've searched for and prayed,
These are my favorite things on eBay!

When the snipers
Steal my bargains
In the final hour,
I'll sign on to eBay and swallow my pride,
And bid on some Model Power!

[the sellers sing:]
Shipments that aren't overweight by two ounces,
Three-figure sales when the check never bounces,
Regular buyers with bank checks to pay,
These are my favorite things on eBay!

Buyers who jump at an "Only three days" sale,
Rubes who pay more than it's costing at retail,
Positive feedback with nice things to say,
These are my favorite things on eBay!

Frenzied collectors who bid in a panic,
Buy so much stuff it would sink the Titanic;
They've got to have it, don't care what they pay,
These are my favorite things on eBay!

When they don't meet
My reserve price
And I'm feeling sore,
I'll re-list on eBay for one-fifty less
And start off a bidding war!
