| Max Gray
life cut tragically short
(mid-50's) |
|
Model Railroader
- personal layout: a custom O-Gauge train layout
that was bigger than an average American's home
|
|
Manufacturer: Max Gray; Perfection Scale Models
- 1935-1966,
Max Gray was a pioneer in:
- offering
printed board sides with an emphasis on private owner reefer cars.
- developed
CHAMP decals (still marketed by the Champion Decal Company).

Importer, Max Gray
- Early
importer, primarily brass from Japan. 1952 - 1963.
- After
he became aware of the skills available in occupied Japan following WWII, he went on to develop a line of handmade
brass rolling stock (see partial list below.
- the advantage Max had with his lovely wife who
at meetings would advise Max as what the Japanese men were saying during negotiations for a model
- yet another O Scaler
- Line
eventually was acquired by KEMTRON.
- catalog
listed motor and gear ratio employed
in each imported locomotive.
- For
more information try these resources:
- TraiNutz.com (The Brass Interlist); this list is always growing and includes some pricing information
(original and appraisals)
- "NYC Steam in 'O' Scale Brass" by W. L. Gwyer; published on the Internet at Caboose Hobbies. Good discussion of older
imports.
- Additional
information is available upon request from the Walthers Collection library of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA). E-mail for more details.

Max Gray on the Desirability
of Handcrafted Goods
"It
may not be untimely to call attention here to the fact that any article made entirely by hand and of good quality
retains its value long after a mass-produced article is forgotten. The handmade article due to limitations of such
process will not decline in value as will products manufactured in endless quantity."
