| And Others Talk about Lorell… "Lorell Joiner and his Great Southern" by Bob Hegge, Model Railroader. June 1980, pg. 60 |
| Sponsor/Host: TWO (2) O Scale National Conventions
in San Antonio, Texas 1988 & 1996 (see Convention History), held in hotels off the beautiful Riverwalk within walking distance of the Alamo and many other attractions. Those few who braved the heat of a Texas Summer for the event really enjoyed it. The crowd was smaller, both in dealers and attendees, than when the national is held on the East Coast; but this host arranged each day's activities so that there would be ample time for everyone, dealers and attendees, to talk with other modelers and enjoy a clinic. Lorell also held a private dinner for the dealers (and a visit to the Great Southern) at his own home during the convention. The national ran so smoothly that you just knew how much work was done beforehand — no surprises at the hotel, no upsets in clinics or the trading rooms, and posted schedules everywhere. Lorell had ample help from nearby clubs; air-conditioned buses were available for the layout tours; and even on the hottest day (105), a walk down by the Riverwalk was comfortable with cool breezes from doorway fans as well as air-conditioned restaurants and stores of every kind just steps away. Lorell just smiled and looked relaxed as we all enjoyed the meet (and his Texas heat). He was there each day before we arrived and last to leave for home. By the end of the meet in 1996, Lorell was heard muttering something about "Never again..." but maybe in a few more years? |
