Long Live NAUG
For more than a decade, AppleWorks Classic has been meeting the
increasingly sophisticated needs of Apple II users by providing an
integrated and seamless environment that provides word processing,
database and spreadsheet capabilities. As each new version of
AppleWorks has been released, more and more capabilities have been
added to the program, and more and more computing power has been
bestowed upon Apple II users.
For the past decade, the National AppleWorks User Group (NAUG) has
been one of AppleWorks' staunchest proponents by providing superb
technical support for tens of thousands of loyal AppleWorks' users.
NAUG published an informative newsletter, maintained a huge library of
AppleWorks related materials, published books, operated a BBS, and
maintained an active presence on all of the major online services.
Throughout the past decade, NAUG has been a phenomenal source of
AppleWorks support and an integral part of the Apple II community.
NAUG has educated AppleWorks users and taught them how to do what
can't be done with an Apple II. NAUG has helped users to push
AppleWorks into performing tasks undreamed of by the author of the
program.
Sadly, in November, 1995, the dwindling number of NAUG members were
informed that The National AppleWorks User Group would cease to exist
after December 31, 1995.
In the November, 1995 issue of the AppleWorks Forum, NAUG founder
Warren Williams sought to ease the sense of loss felt by NAUG members.
Regarding the voluminous amount of AppleWorks related disks that would
no longer be available from NAUG, Warren Williams wrote: "We will
archive and protect those disks in case they are of historical
interest to future generations. We will also try to identify a library
or other institution that will care for the disks and make them
available to researchers and others with a legitimate interest in
their contents."
Shareware Solutions II is proud to announce that it has been chosen by
the National AppleWorks User Group as the official repository for the
huge AppleWorks related NAUG disk library. Shareware Solutions II will
continue to distribute NAUG's disk library and back issues of the
disk-based electronic edition of the AppleWorks Forum newsletter:
NAUG-On-Disk.
NAUG Resources
Although NAUG has already ceased to exist, its legacy will live on
well into the next century, as the body of work that it has left
behind is enormous. When NAUG went out of business, its AppleWorks
related library disks numbered more than 400, and there were 65
complete issues of NAUG-On-Disk. Due to the enormity of the NAUG
AppleWorks' library, it's simply impossible to even attempt to
describe all those disks within the pages of this newsletter.
Instead, Shareware Solutions II has acquired all of the remaining
catalogs that describe the hundreds of NAUG disks available. The
catalog is more than 60 pages in length, yet it only goes to 1994. For
that reason, we have created a supplemental catalog on disk that
contains information about the contents of all disks produced and/or
distributed by NAUG since then. Additionally, we have added an
AppleWorks database to that disk which lists every article that ever
appeared in the AppleWorks Forum newsletter, and have added a smaller
database that describes all the articles which appear on all 65 issues
of NAUG-On-Disk. That catalog plus disk is currently available for $5,
which includes postage to anywhere in the world.
As you look through the NAUG-On-Disk database, keep in mind that not
only do the disks contain the full text of all the articles that
appeared in the newsletter, but also the templates and TimeOut modules
that were described in the newsletter and the latest AppleWorks
library disks that were discussed in that issue.
National AppleWorks Users Group Public Domain Catalog
1995-1996 Edition
(Please Note: The following catalog was developed by NAUG, yet all of
the disks are currently available from Shareware Solutions II. Except
for editing the catalog to reflect the current pricing of disks, the
catalog has been left intact...despite the fact that NAUG no longer
exists.)
Welcome to the catalog of public domain disks available from NAUG.
This catalog describes the more than 200 disks developed by numerous
sources, including other user groups and our own NAUG members. Unless
otherwise noted, each 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch disk costs $5, which
includes all shipping and handling fees.
About the Catalog:
Each disk is listed separately, followed by the file names of the
templates contained on both sides of the disk. After the file name of
each template, three columns - Type, Application, and Description -
tell more about the template. Unless indicated otherwise, the
templates are compatible with all versions of AppleWorks.
The abbreviations under "Type" are as follows:
WP - AppleWorks word processor file.
BAS - program written in BASIC.
DB - AppleWorks data base file.
SYS - system file.
SS - AppleWorks spreadsheet file.
TXT - text (ASCII) file.
Key:
* - there is a separate documentation file on the disk.
? - there is a sample file on the disk. The title of the
sample begins with an "X" followed by the template name.
+ - requires more than 128K of RAM.
5.25 - available on ProDOS format 5.25-inch disks.
3.5 - available on ProDOS format 3.5-inch disks.
AWGS - available on AppleWorks GS format 3.5-inch disks.
Mac - available on Macintosh format disks.
& - not compatible with AppleWorks 3.0.
3.0 - requires AppleWorks 3.0.
About Shareware:
Some of the disks in this catalog are "shareware". Shareware is
copyright work that the author distributes through NAUG. The shareware
developer invites you to try the material on the disk; if you find it
useful, you send the requested payment directly to the developer. A
"READ.ME" file on the disk describes the expected payment and the
terms and conditions under which you can use the disk. You pay NAUG's
regular fee for shareware disks; this reimburses the group for the
expense of maintaining the disk library and producing copies of the
disk. Later, if you use the material on the disk, you send the
specified shareware payment directly to the author, not to NAUG.
National AppleWorks Users Group (NAUG)
NAUG disks come in three categories: Home, Education, and Business.
Home disks contain templates that are useful for doing tasks around
your home. The Education disks have templates to help educators with
their work, including gradebooks, course planning templates, library
aids, and assignment books. Business disks have templates for business
applications such as accounting, payroll, loan calculation,
record-keeping, inventory, and other financial matters.

The BBS Help Files Disk contains an AppleWorks word processor file
that includes all 22 help files on NAUG's bulletin board, the
Electronic Forum. The word processor file is marked so you can quickly
locate the section you want to read. You can print this file to
produce your own copy of the complete BBS manual. Our thanks to Bill

The AppleWorks Users Group (TAWUG)
TAWUG, The AppleWorks Users Group of Denver, Colorado, is a clearing
house for AppleWorks public domain templates. Their early philosophy
was to include in their library everything that came to them on a
disk. Some of the best files in the early TAWUG library were distilled
into the collection below. NAUG members Jerry Hansen and John Denzer
selected and organized these disks. TAWUG's recent disks include only
selected files; NAUG kept those disks intact.

Mathematics Disks
This section contains disks developed by Mitchell Bernstein that will
produce worksheets and tests for mathematics teachers. The disks are
compatible with all versions of AppleWorks, with all Apple II
computers capable of running AppleWorks, and with ImageWriter I and
ImageWriter II printers. Apple IIe owners must have an Apple Super
Serial Card. The disks are not compatible with other interface cards
or printers.

Disk: Algebra Disks
Format: 5.25 (3 disks) 3.5(2 disks)
These disks include five custom fonts you download to an ImageWriter I
or ImageWriter II printer. The fonts print mathematical characters,
symbols, shapes, and graphs not included in the printer's standard
character set. Then you use the AppleWorks word processor files on the
disk to generate any of the 185 Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 worksheets,
tests, and quizzes that you print with these fonts. The disks include
complete documentation and a data base index of the files on the
disks.
_______________________________________________________________
Disk: Geometry 3 and Graphs
Format: 5.25 3.5
This disk includes a special mathematics font created by Mr. Bernstein
and a font downloader that loads the font into the memory in the
ImageWriter. The files on the disk use that font to produce 20
different geometry worksheets that involve proofs.
The Graphs component of the disk uses a special font to produce 24
different size X/Y graphs you can incorporate within word processor
files. A sample worksheet on the disk shows how you can include these
graphs in a document. Finally, the disk includes a file that produces
twelve X/Y graphs on a single 8.5 x 11 inch page that students can use
to solve problems.
_______________________________________________________________
Disk: Geometry Worksheets
Format: 5.25 (2 disks) 3.5 (2 disks)
Programs on these bootable disks download a special geometry font into
an ImageWriter I or ImageWriter II printer. That gives the printer the
ability to generate mathematical characters, symbols, and shapes not
available in the standard character set. You then use the AppleWorks
word processor files on the disks to generate more than 100 geometry
worksheets, quizzes, grids, graphs, and even a seating chart/gradebook
combination you can print with this special font. Compatible with all
versions of AppleWorks. Documentation is included in a word processor
file on each disk.

Disk: ListWorks
Format: 5.25 3.5
This stand-alone application lets AppleWorks users print 3-across
mailing labels and get 3 column output from any ASCII (text) file. The
user "prints" the AppleWorks file to an ASCII file on a disk, then
uses ListWorks to print the output in column format. ListWorks is
shareware; the program's author, Andrew Mackie, asks that users submit
$10 to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. He sends excellent
documentation to users who submit the shareware fee. This is a
self-booting disk and includes the latest version of ProDOS.
_______________________________________________________________
Disk: NAUG Hard Drive Test Disk
Format: 5.25 3.5
NAUG's Hard Drive Test Disk contains "IOTest" and "Tester", two
programs that test the functionality of your hard disk drive and
interface card.
IOTest, written by Walker Archer of Quality Computers, checks your
drive by writing and reading repeatedly to each block on the drive
surface. IOTest ignores the file structure on the disk, tests every
block, but destroys all data on the disk.
John Link's Tester program writes and reads large files to the drive.
Tester preserves the file structure and data but requires extra unused
space on the disk.
Our thanks to Walker Archer and John Link for developing these
programs for NAUG.

onto a RAM disk and patches AppleWorks so it uses those dictionaries
when you spell check a document. This dramatically enhances the speed
of the AppleWorks' spell checking routines. A unique feature of RAM
Loader is the program's ability to automatically save your custom
dictionary back onto a floppy or hard disk when you add words to the
dictionary. Developed for NAUG by Brian Wells. Shareware fee to
author: $10.
_______________________________________________________________
Disk: Shrink-It
Format: 5.25 3.5
Shrink-It reduces the size of files stored on a disk. The program
unpacks Shrink-It, Binary II, and .ACI files; thus you can use this
one program to unpack most files. The primary application of Shrink-It
is to reduce the time it takes to transfer files between computers and
to save space when you archive files you do not use regularly.
The current version of Shrink-It uses a more efficient algorithm and
offers some features not found on earlier versions of the program.
While the new versions of Shrink-It can unpack files shrunken with any
earlier version of the program, Shrink-It 1.x and 2.x cannot unpack
files shrunken with Shrink-It 3.x.
Our thanks to Andy Nicholas for the many hours he spent developing
Shrink-It.
_______________________________________________________________
Disk: Shrink-It GS
Format: 3.5
Shrink-It GS is the first version of Shrink-It that can handle GS/OS
file folders and GS/OS files with resource forks. Shrink-It GS can
also unpack many of the files found in the MS-DOS, Macintosh, Amiga,
Atari, and Unix libraries of the online services. Although programs
written for these computers will not run on a IIgs, you can use
Shrink-It GS to transfer text files, programmer's source code and
graphics files to the IIgs. (You must convert the graphics files with
public domain utilities such as SHR.Convert.)
Our thanks to Andy Nicholas for writing Shrink-It GS and to Karl
Bunker for writing the documentation.
Shrink-It GS requires an Apple IIgs and GS/OS 5.02 or later. Shrink-It
GS is available only on a 3.5-inch disk and, since it requires GS/OS,

Disk: TimeOut Pseudodisk
Format: 5.25 3.5
TimeOut Pseudodisk significantly reduces disk swapping when you boot
TimeOut-enhanced 5.25-inch disk copies of AppleWorks.
TimeOut Pseudodisk contains short directory segments from each TimeOut
module. You modify the disk so it reflects the TimeOut modules you own
and leave the modified disk in Drive 2 when you launch AppleWorks.
That eliminates the need to swap TimeOut disks during the bootup
process. Complete directions appear on the disk.
We recommend this disk for all users of 5.25-inch disk systems who own
more TimeOut modules than will fit on a single 5.25-inch disk.
Our thanks to Klokhuis, the Apple Users Group of The Netherlands, and
particularly to Dennis de Leeuw, coordinator of Klokhuis' AppleWorks

Printer Drivers for AppleWorks 5
NAUG members who want to use a custom printer with AppleWorks 5 should
order NAUG's new Printer Drivers for AppleWorks 5 disk. This disk
contains AppleWorks 5-compatible drivers for more than 100 printers
not normally supported by AppleWorks. To use the disk, you identify
the file with the printer definition you need, copy the file into your
/AW5/ directory, and re-name the file SEG.ER.
The disk includes complete directions, an AppleWorks data base file to
help you locate the correct driver, and a data base with the
AppleWorks codes for 23 popular Apple IIe-compatible printer interface
cards.
The disk also includes Doug Gum's valuable new utility that converts
AppleWorks 4.0 SEG.ER files into AppleWorks 5 format. That program
lets you use your customized AppleWorks 4 printer information with
AppleWorks 5.
NAUG's Printer Drivers for AppleWorks 5 comes on a single 3.5-inch
disk ($5) or two 5.25-inch disks ($5).

Government '95
This disk contains AppleWorks data base files with the name, address,
and telephone number of all the Senators and Representatives in the
new 104th Congress. The disk also includes the name and party
affiliation of all state Governors. This is the prefect disk for
teachers, students, and others who want to contact their elected
officials.
Our thanks to Howard Katz for preparing these disks for NAUG, and to
Doug Gum for developing the AppleWorks printer driver converter for
NAUG.

QuickView 1.1
NAUG's updated QuickView disk contains Chris Serreau's update to Mark
Munz's program that lets you read AppleWorks word processor files
without launching AppleWorks. That makes QuickView valuable to schools
that have Apple II systems unable to run AppleWorks and to individuals
who want to take a quick look at an AppleWorks file.
Chris Serreau's update to QuickView correctly displays word processor
files created by any version of AppleWorks.

File Viewer
File Viewer is Chris Serreau's AppleWorks 4.02 add-on that lets you
examine the byte-by-byte contents of any 8-bit file from within
AppleWorks. File Viewer displays your files in hexadecimal or ASCII
codes.
NAUG's File Viewer Disk, which only works with AppleWorks 4.02,
includes Tim Kellers' modifications that make it easier to install
than the original patch.
Our thanks to Chris Serreau and Tim Keller for donating these disks to
the NAUG Library.

AppleWorks 5.1 Updater
NAUG's Public Domain Library now includes Randy Brandt's AppleWorks
5.1 Updater, which fixes numerous bugs and offers improved performance
compared to AppleWorks 5.0.
In addition to its bug fixes, AppleWorks 5.1 lets you access Debug
while in the outliner, speeds up printing from all the AppleWorks
modules, lets you set different date preferences for each data base
file, lets you enter data base dates without a year, and lets you
specify matching of "whole words only" in the TimeOut Replace
application.
NAUG recommends that members running AppleWorks 5.0 update to version
AppleWorks 5.1. Like all second generation products, you will find
AppleWorks 5.1 more stable than the earlier version of the program.
The AppleWorks 5.1 Updater comes on a 3.5-inch disk and costs $5.
NAUG members can also download this updater from the Electronic Forum,
NAUG's AppleWorks bulletin board service and from the NAUG areas on
GEnie, America Online, and CompuServe. This updater also appears on
this month's issue of NAUG on Disk, which includes all the public
domain offerings announced in this issue of the AppleWorks Forum. NAUG
on Disk costs $5 (including postage) from NAUG. Our thanks to Randy
Brandt for providing this updater to NAUG.

Barrows' Utilities - Disk 18
Roy Barrows, a prolific developer of UltraMacros-based enhancements
for AppleWorks, recently released his eighteenth disk filled with new
and updated AppleWorks utilities. These enhancements require
AppleWorks 5.0 or later. The utilities on the disk include:
Common.D: Finds the common denominator of up to five single digit
numbers.
Compactor: Removes all spaces, empty lines, and punctuation from word
processor files. Useful for teachers who want students to practice the
rules of punctuation.
Encode: Encrypts and de-encrypts word processor files.
Font.Pick: A TimeOut PickFonts work-alike for users who do not want to
load PickFonts onto their system.
WP2DP: Transfers data from a columnar table in a word processor
document into an AppleWorks data base.
ASP.Window: Creates a three cell spreadsheet window in any word
processor document.
ChapterTool: Prepares separate chapters of a book for printing as a
single document.
Mac.Tools: Nineteen utilities you will want on your system. Block
Counter counts the number of words in a block you highlight. Clipboard
Tool displays the contents of the clipboard and lets you set clipboard
margins. Move to Screen Center jumps the cursor to the middle of the
screen. Custom Dictionary Tool makes it easy to switch spelling
dictionaries. Export Block transfers a block of spreadsheet cells into
a word processor document. Export Records transfers a single data base
record into a word processor document. Display Relative File Location
graphically displays your position in a file. File Information
displays information about the current file. Category Jump moves the
cursor to any data base category you specify. Kill Save deletes the
current file from your disk and then saves a new copy of the file.
Number Cells or Records consecutively numbers spreadsheet cells or
data base records. Disk Poll reports the name of the disk in any drive
without changing your path setting. Remember and Return returns to the
current file with a single keystroke. Remove Markers removes all
AppleWorks 5 word processor zero markers set with the Control-Q
command. Letter Switch corrects transposed letters without using the
clipboard. Special Smart Save saves the current file to its original
path and then restores your current path. Word Swap swaps words
without using the clipboard. File Kill instantly deletes any file from
the desktop. Name Bank replaces the current file name with a default
name and saves the original name for re-use.
Settings: Displays your current AppleWorks settings. Valuable for
AppleWorks users who share their computer with others.
Terminator 5.0: Adds and strips returns from blocks of word processor
text or an entire file.
Barrows' Utilities - Disk 18 contains both TimeOut and task file
versions of each utility, word processor files with annotated copies
of the macros, and documentation in AppleWorks word processor files on
the disk. Macro authors will enjoy studying Mr. Barrows' macros to see
how he designs and implements these features.
Barrow's Utilities - Disk 18 is available in 5.25-inch ($5) and
3.5-inch ($5) format.

Barrows' Utilities - Disk 19
NAUG's Public Domain Library now includes Roy Barrows' nineteenth disk
of powerful and useful macro-based utilities for AppleWorks. The
utilities on this disk require AppleWorks 5.0 or later. The disk
includes:
Doc.Count: Four menu-driven utilities that count the number of words
in a word processor document or in any block of text that you
highlight. Doc.Count can also count the number of pages in a document
and the number of occurrences of a string of text in a document.
Edit.Tools: Adds valuable editing tools to AppleWorks. Automatically
sets, calls, and deletes markers, switches letters and words, converts
words to upper or lower case, capitalizes words and indents text to
the current cursor position. Edit.Tools also deletes words, lines,
sentences, and blocks of text, and restores the deleted text. Includes
a comprehensive help screen.
File.Mark: Inserts identifying information at the beginning of a word
processor file. The inserted data includes the file name, date, and
time the file was created, the location from which the file was last
loaded onto the desktop, the total number of lines in the file, and
the total number of pages in the document.
Helpful for differentiating between similar files.
Gloss.DB: Adds a glossary function to AppleWorks 5.x's data base
module.
Word.Search: Searches a word processor file for all occurrences of any
word or phrase you enter. Indicates the total number of occurrences
and line citations for each occurrence of the word.
Line.Find: Jumps to any line number you specify in a word processor
document. A useful companion to "Word.Search".
Lib.Tool: A menu-driven utility that adds functionality to TimeOut
File Librarian. Lib.Tool automatically creates file libraries,
launches any task file at the current path, and quickly loads binary
picture files and AppleWorks files from the current path. Requires
TimeOut File Librarian.
Analyze 5.0: Creates an alphabetized list of all the words in a word
processor file. Makes it easy to create custom dictionaries and study
the words you use in your writing.
DataSelect: Quickly transfers data from an individual data base record
into a word processor document.
Number.Line: Inserts line numbers at the beginning of every line of a
word processor document. Useful for legal documents and for helping
students locate specific citations in a document.
PageMark: A menu-driven page marking system. Also generates a "Mark
Location List" that makes it easy to locate the markers in your
document.
Screen.Notes: A menu-driven utility that lets you create and save
small Post-It-like notes within AppleWorks.
Window.Plus: Opens a three-cell spreadsheet "window" in any AppleWorks
word processor document.
Word.Zap: Removes duplicate words from word lists that you create with
Mr. Barrows' Analyze utility.
Barrows' Utilities - Disk 19 contains both TimeOut and task file
versions of each utility, word processor files with annotated copies
of the macros, and documentation in AppleWorks word processor files on
the disk. Macro authors will enjoy studying Mr. Barrows' macros to see
how he designs and implements these features.
Barrows' Utilities - Disk 19 is available in 5.25-inch ($5) and
3.5-inch ($5) format.
