April : Return to Aachen, rent furnished house Am Beverbach 7. We start first house keeping. The ownser, "Tante Pia", a widow, lives upstairs.
August 10: Our daughter Claudia Bärbel Goertz is born in Oma Elfriede Kittler's home.
I start writing articles for vol.4 of Mennonitisches Lexikon and send them off to editor Gerhard Hein in Berlin. My main interest is West Prussia where I feel that some topics have not been covered adequately. Since nobody else seems to want to write better articles, I decide, "Do it yourself". The war events, lost home country, my life being spared through the years convince me that the history of West Prussian Mennonites deserves to be told. If noone else will tell it, I myself should try to do it. No excuse for not trying. Herbert Wiebe, Kurt Kauenhoven, Gustav E.Reimer are my examples to follow.
July 1: My monthly salary at Philips Zentrallaboratium Aachen is changed to
August 31: Our son Dirk-Uwe Paul Goertz is born at Neuwied Krankenhaus.
We get word that National Bureau of Standards, Boulder, Colorado wants to hire me. FBI inquires at neighborhood about my Communist etc. character. I get offer of employment from NBS, of pay for moving family, furniture. I accept and quit Philips employment per September 30. We go to Frankfurt for US visa, contract signing, lie detector test. I am told that "no lie detector test, no employment contract".
October: Movers come and pack our belongings from Aachen, Am Beverbach 7.
November 3: A MATS air transport plane takes us four from Frankfurt airport.
November 4: Touchdown at McGuire AFB, one week at NYC Hotel Alamac, processing. Sister Eva (Goertz) Smirnoff, widow of Feo Berkhemer who lives in NYC, visits us.
November 11: Touch down at 11:11 AM at Stapleton airport, Denver. What a beautiful country, mountains, clear air. Louis Vogler of NBS takes us to Boulder, helps us find an appartment. We rent furnished half-duplex on 7th St, find snow on ground.
November 13: Start new job at National Bureau of Standards, Boulder, Colorado, 83.Radio Propagation Enginering Div.,60.Tropospheric Analysis Section. GS 11, $7560 p.a.
December 1: We rent unfurnished 3 BR house 235 S.38th St, Martin Acres,Boulder from Mr.Pirch; wait for our furniture to arrive from Aachen, Germany. Live in an empty, unfurnished house for two weeks. Since Bärbel has German driver's licence, Dick Abbott gets learner's permit, driver's license for her. I get learner's permit with Bärbel as main driver. We attend First Mennonite Church in Denver, Bud Bishop pastor. Furniture arrives from Germany on December 15, 1960.
April: I borrow $500 from the NBS credit union and purchase a Buick 1954 car. I take physics courses at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

I take my second PhD comprehensive exam at CU, pass. At this time, NBS laid off many workers. I get research assistanceship with Dr.M.Mizushima at CU, continue research at NBS with Dr.Yardley Beers doing microwave spectroscopy of gases. If I had not tried to take the comprehensive exams and taken NO for an answer when I applied for graduate admission, this would have been the end of my physics education. The graduate assistanceship is funded by the US National Institute of Health.
