Guide to Apoid genera in Colorado Springs
For pictures of insect pollinators, click here and search for COLORADO.
Checklists of insects to be expected in a certain area, are difficult
to compile. The most complete listings were done for New York (Leonard)
and North Carolina (Brimley).
The listing for Colorado Springs is less ambitious since it tries
to cover the wild bees (Apoidea) only which may be expected or suspected
to be present on flowers in the area.
I have tried to include the months and some other pointers.
YOUR help is needed to confirm or correct this listing.
I consulted Cockerell's papers to make an educated guess for the listing,
especially his "Bees of Boulder County" (1907) and "Supplementary Notes on
Colorado Bees with a List of all Genera" (1928).
The number of bee species in Colorado may be between 900 (Cockerell) and
1075 species (Virginia Scott, CUMUSEUM collection manager).
I used Virginia Scott's "Quick and Dirty Guide to Colorado Bumble Bees"
for Bombus and Psithyrus IDs.

When researching bees I find it important to know which
bee genera are known to be parasitic and which are not.
I would not expect to find parasitic species, if I know that their prey
is not in the area. Also, I expect parasitic individuals
to be less numerous than their prey species, certainly so on flowers.
Apart from the halictic genus Sphecodes (preying on Halictus and
Lasioglossum species) and the apid genus Psithyrus
(preying on Bombus species), most parasitic bees are reported from
two Apoid families:
Megachilidae (Stelis complex incl.Chelynia, Coelioxys) and
Anthophoridae (Nomada complex, Epeolus complex, Epeloides,
Pasites complex, Neolarra, Melecta, Xeromelecta, Ericrocis,
Townsendiella, Masoplia, Zacosmia).
Another grouping of bees can be done according to flight season:
Evolutionarily, ancient bees like the short-tongued Colletes,
Andrena, Dufourea may be expected primarily in the spring (March-June).
These primitive bees ("Proto-Bees") on the evolutionary ladder
prevail to be pollinators early in the season,
but also early (and late) in the day when it is shady.
More advanced bees (like Melissodes) pollinate later in summer
and during the hot hours of the day.
On Helianthus petiolaris here I find Andrena helianthi (a large
species) during the early and late shady hours of the day only and
Melissodes agilis during the hot sunny hours only.
The Halictidae may be called the "Slender-body Bees" with L/W ratios
often greater than 5. The females are often pollen-powdered all over.
Nomada bees often have 2 yellow spots between their hind wings (with
the possible exceptions of those species having red on thorax or abdomen).
If the anterior abdominal bands are top-cut in the dorsal center,
you are probably looking at Xenoglossum, Epeolus or Triepeolus bees.
Another bee grouping is what I call the Jelly-belly bees which have
a ventral scopa to collect pollen. They are the females of the
non-parasitic Megachelidae (Megachile, Anthidium complex, Anthidiellum,
Hoplitis, Lithurgus, Heriades, Osmia, Ashmeadiella).
Some Ceratina species have a ventral pseudo-scopa of wax exuding from
ventral glands.
The "long-horned" bees are likely to be males of the genera
Melissodes, Svastra, Tetralonia (= Synhalonia) and have antennae of a
length exceeding half their body length.
Tetralonia (=Synhalonia) bees have 4 (=tetra) abdominal bands.
If you see a bee with wasp-like abdominal (white or yellow) bands
which are cut at the center top, you may be looking at some
Anthidium, Dianthidium, Paranthidium, Heteranthidium,
Anthidiellum species. They hold their apex curved down.
If the abdominal bands are merely narrower at the center top, you may be
looking at some (less wasp-like) Epeolus or Triepeolus species.
The larger North American genera are Andrena (500+ species),
Perdita (c.300 spp.) mainly in the arid West, Megachile (c.150 spp.)
and Melissodes (c.150 spp.).
Temperature is important for bees to visit flowers. If it is cold,
only Bombus and hairy Andrena and Osmia species will venture to come out.

page # of the species in Krombein's et al. Catalog of Hymenoptera (1979);
(since synonyms are a problem to be sorted out)

The rare species (~) are arbitralily based on the number of specimen
found in the CU Museum in Boulder (less than 10 specimen).
When I found a box full of specimen of the same species, I believe
them to be more or less common.
Kratochwil (Phytocoenologia, 1984) found individual numbers of social bee
species to be considerably higher than solitary species in Germany.
I am listing the social species (.so.) to be expected in Colorado
Springs based on Michener (1974) and expect them to be more numerous
than solitary species, too:
